Munising
Laurabelle "Laurie" Leffel, age 85, of Connors Road in Munising, died early Monday morning, July 5, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 2, 1925 in Munising to Edward and Eva (Bonner) Perry. Laurie grew up in Brown's Addition and attended Wm. G. Mather High School. She worked briefly in Chicago and returned home to work at the Dime Store. Laurie met Jess Leffel as he was passing through town visiting his brother and after WWII they were married on August 11, 1945. She and Jess raised their children. Laurie returned to Wm. G. Mather High School to attend her Junior and Senior years. Laurie and her son Butch graduated from the same stage in 1966. She worked twenty-two years at the Munising Memorial Hospital in the admitting and billing departments. Laurie then went to work at the Dogpatch which was a job she loved. She loved being with the people and people loved being with her. Due to health problems, she had to leave the work at the Patch. Laurie enjoyed camping, loved fishing, golfing, bowling, playing cards and bingo, square dancing with Jess, and reading Western novels. She and Jess spent many Saturday nights listening to Elmer Aho on the radio and dancing together in their living room. Laurie was a member of the Women's Wetmore Community Club and the D.A.V. Auxiliary. She served as a Brownie Leader and worked on the Election Board for Munising Township.
Laurie is survived by her husband of almost sixty-five years - Jess of Munising; son - Ron "Butch" (Lisa) Leffel, Sr.; daughters - Bunny (Ed) Heyrman, Kathy (John) Bennett, Jacky Leffel all of Munising, and Mary Jo Bennett of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren - Ron (Pam) Leffel, Jr., Joan (Tim) Lawson, Jessica (Dan) Mickelson, Laura (Skeet) Brock, Jenny Leffel, Laura (Mike) St. Amour, Jimmy (Kristle) Leffel, Joey (Tiffiane) Heyrman, Billy (Jessie) Leffel, Lisa McCoy, Aaron Leffel, Austin Leffel, and Andrew Leffel; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brothers - Buck (Colleen) Perry, Billy (Helen) Perry, and Jack Perry; sisters - Joyce (Jim ) Rindhage and Phyllis (Arnie) Aho; aunt - Bonnie LeVeque; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, son William Larry Leffel and great-granddaughter Willow Marie Heyrman.
A memorial service will be held at the Munising Township Hall in Wetmore on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jason LaFlamme officiating. Visiting time with family and friends will be from 12:00 noon until the service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising at a later date.
