Lavina “Vie” Cota-Groom, age 83, of Wetmore, died Monday, January 11, 2016 surrounded by her loving family at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on July 20, 1932 in Newberry, Michigan to the late William and Ethel (Gohl) Margeson. Vie married Clifford Edward Cota on April 30, 1949 and together they raised their four sons. They were married for thirty-eight years when Clifford preceded her in death in 1988. Vie worked a number of different jobs. She worked as an aide at the Superior Health Haven and as a clerk at the People Store and Jenson’s Wetmore Store. She then retired from Timber Products in 1992 after working in the veneer mill for seventeen years. On October 3, 1992, Vie married Harold Groom and they were married for over fourteen years when he preceded her in death in 2007. Vie enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels, bowling, baking, and spending time with her family at the camp on Wolf Lake. She was an active member of the Munising Booster Club while her boys were in school and was a member of the Women of the Moose where she enjoyed volunteering her time and held an officer position.
Vie is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law – Kip and Jan Cota of Lost Lake, Bill and Nan Cota of Van Meer, Rick Cota of Wetmore, and Theresa Cota (Rick Hendrick) of Munising; grandchildren – Jody (John) Jared, Cory (Kristy) Cota, Rich (Kristie) Cota, Amy (Bill) Schieding, Kurt (Tanya) Cota, Mark Cota, Mandy Cota, Missy (John) Richardson, Crystal Cota, Audrey (Riley) Stout, Chelsey (Alex) Zamarron, and Richard Cota; great-grandchildren – Madison, Logan, Hattie, Mason, Mitchel, Bradley, Mya, Mackenzie, Madelyn, Gentry, Gracyn, and two more on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Ethel, husbands Clifford Cota and Harold Groom, son Bruce Cota, and sister Doris “Dot” Steinhoff.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Pastor Sandi Kolder will conduct Vie’s funeral at the funeral home on Thursday, January 14 at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow at the Moose Lodge in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 2:30 p.m.
