Grand Marais
Leo A. Baudoux, age 88, of Grand Marias died suddenly at his home on Saturday, July 25, 2009. He was born on January 27, 1921 to the late Leonard and Marie (Marsh) Baudoux in Saginaw, Michigan. Leo graduated from Arthur Hill Trade School, and then began working at A.T. Ferrell making farming equipment. He entered the U.S. Army on August 25, 1942. After basic training Leo received flight and ground school training in the Army Air Corps, due to high enlistment in the Air Corps he was transferred to the 1259th Engineering Division. He served in WWII in the in the American and European African Middle Eastern Theaters. Leo's division was in charge of building roads and bridges, and he was one of the men responsible for the waterproofing the vehicles that were used in the invasion of Sicily and Crete. He was honorably discharged on February 9, 1946. Shortly after returning home Leo built and started Leo's Garage in Saginaw Township, he owned and operated it for forty-five years. He was one of Michigan's first mechanics to become NIASE (now ASE) certified. On August 6, 1955 Leo married Suzanne Schmidt. He was one of the charter members of the Saginaw Township Volunteer Fire Department. Leo and Sue moved to Grand Marais in 1989. One of his reasons for moving to Grand Marais was his love of fishing. It did not matter where the fish were or what specie, he would try to catch them. Leo also enjoyed tinkering with machinery and carpentry. He would get a great thrill out of making something run. Leo also enjoyed driving his Model T in the Grand Marais 4th of July parade, and watching the blue birds in the houses he built across his property. He was a member of the Grand Marais Coast Guard Auxiliary, Second Presbyterian Church in Saginaw, Grand Marias United Methodist Church, and the NRA.
Leo is survived by his wife of fifty-three years - Sue Baudoux; five children - Laura (Ken) Piwowarski of Hemlock, MI, Jean (Dr. Justin) Dey of Saginaw, MI, Mary Yoos of Saginaw, Bill (Lois) Baudoux of Portage, MI, and Ed (Tammy) Baudoux of Grayling, MI; thirteen grandchildren - Peter and Michael Piwowarski, Leo, Rachel, and Vincent Dey, Nathan and Brandon Koerber, Laura and Genna Baudoux, and Alexandra, Nicholas, Christopher, and Samuel Baudoux; brother - Daniel; sisters- Margie, Mary, Florence, and Joan; and many fishing buddies in Grand Marais. He was preceded in death by his parents - Leonard and Marie; siblings - Albert, Violet, Edwin, Leonard, Jr. and infant brother Jim.
Leo's memorial service will be on August 29, 2009 at the Richland Twp. Hall, at 1:00 p.m. Honoring Leo's wishes he was cremated before his services. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Leo's name to the United Methodist Church of Grand Marais and the NRA.
