October 22, 1927 — January 1, 2018

Chatham

Leo H. Lammi, age 90, of Chatham, died Monday, January 1, 2018 at his home in Chatham.  He was born on October 22, 1927 in his family home in Chatham, Michigan to Finnish immigrants Matti and Helena (Niemi) Lammi.  He graduated from Eben High School and was “King of the class” in 1945.  Leo then enlisted into the United States Navy and was stationed at the Naval Training Center in San Diego.  He was honorably discharged in August of 1946 as a Seaman Second Class and was awarded the WWII Victory Ribbon.  In 1947, Leo was hired by the U.S. Forest Service.   Planting trees, fire tower watchman, and surveying timber, were just a few of his many responsibilities with the Forest Service, before retiring in 1983 after thirty-six years of service.  On June 20, 1952, Leo married Shirley Dailey and together they raised their family in Chatham.  Their home was only a block away from Leo’s family’s home that he was born and raised in.  Leo enjoyed fishing, trips to the casino, cross word puzzles, playing cards, cheering for the Detroit Lions and Tigers, cruising with his dog Gus, and his cat Millie.  He loved getting away to camp where he could fish and have poker night.  Leo was a member of the Chatham Lions Club and the American Legion.

He is survived by his children – Ruth (Jay) Lammi-Pozner of Sears, MI, Bill (Kathy) Lammi of The Villages, FL, Bob (Kay) Lammi of Cincinnati, OH, Mike (Christine) Lammi of Jackson, MI, and Tom (Lana) Lammi of Green Bay, WI; grandchildren – Rachel (Joe), Chris (Felicia), Sara (Jason), Caryn, Matt (Monica), Ryan, Bob (Morgan), Allison, and Kolby; great-grandchildren – Macon, Memphis, Sophie, and Parker; and nephews – Patrick McGee and Matt Lammi.  Leo was preceded in death by his parents - Matti and Helena; wife – Shirley; son – Andy Lammi; and siblings – John, Edith, Ruth, and Leslie.

Visitation will be on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m.  The American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will conduct military honors beginning at 4:00 p.m.  Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct Leo’s memorial service immediately following military honors.  A private committal service will take place at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Leo’s name may be made to the Alger County Animal Shelter.
