Munising
Leon Alphonse Gamelin, age 66, of Munising, died early Wednesday morning, January 14, 2015 at his home at the Superior Health Haven following a brief illness of pneumonia. He was born on July 7, 1948 in Munising to the late Leon and Marion (Forgette) Gamelin. It often occurred that when a child was born with Down's syndrome in the 1940's, they were institutionalized for life. Leon was lovingly raised in Munising by his parents and sister. He was a happy child and continued his smiling demeanor throughout most of his adult life. Leon made his home in adult care facilities in Hulbert, Germfask, and Munising. He was cared for and experienced many joys at his homes. When in Hulbert, Leon worked at a recycling facility. He enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling, and watching old Western re-runs in Germfask, and while in Munising, he loved to listen to music while he ate and play with his Matchbox cars.
Leon is survived by his sister - Vikki Hardley of Palm Coast, FL; nieces and nephew - Ame, Ross, and Tish; aunt - Barb Gamelin of Munising; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Leon and Marion and his brother-in-law Ted Hardley.
Services will be held on Saturday morning, January 17, 2015. Visitation will be at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate Leon's funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
