Lillian Maria Haapala, age 88, of M-67 Trenary, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday morning, October 12, 2006 at the Harbour View Health Center in Munising. She was born on December 13, 1917 in Winters, Michigan to Frank and Lempi (Wuorinen) Pajunen. Lillian attended school in Trenary and on December 27, 1935, she married Niel John Happala. They were married over sixty-six years when he preceded her in death on July 27, 2002. Lillian was a homemaker and she enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She also enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and playing cards. Lillian truly enjoyed the past seventeen months living at Harbour View. The workers and residents became her extended family. Lillian even played BINGO with them on Wednesday night before she died.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law - Ken and JoAnn Haapala of Shelter Bay; granddaughters - Cindy (Gary) Kallio and Lynn (Brian) Ruska all of Rumely; great-grandsons - Dan Kallio and Eric Ruska; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, husband Niel, sisters Ingrid Lusardi and Sigrid Seppanen, and brothers Walter and Toivo Pajunen.
A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Paul Kelto on Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham at 1:00 p.m.
