Lloyd D. Miller, age 96, of Orchard Street, Munising, died on Friday morning, November 18, 2011 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on December 10, 1914 in Webberville, Michigan and graduated from Dansville High School. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Lloyd worked in the finance department of Oldsmobile and owned a gas station with his brother in the Lansing area. He married Gertrude "Gertie" Lindfors on August 14, 1941. They were both graduates of Melba Beauty College in Lansing and owned and operated the prosperous DeLuxe Beauty Shop, employing ten beauticians in Cadillac for nine years. In 1953, they moved to Munising and operated Miller's Tourist Cabins with a beauty shop in their home on the southeast corner of Cedar and Varnum Streets. Gertie and Lloyd had an old pump organ in their home and enjoyed gathering around it and singing the old Gospel Hymns. They attended the Methodist Church together where Lloyd served as treasurer from 1953 - 1981. They joined the Presbyterian Church on October 25, 1981. Lloyd and Gertie cared for his mother for over thirty years. Edith Miller died in 1962. In 1955, they built the Northern Motel (now the Day's Inn) and the Red Cedar Restaurant (now Sydney's) where the old ball park used to be, and leased the Red Cedar to Charlie Everett. In 1964, they sold the Red Cedar to Charlie and Almeda Everett and the Northern Motel to Al and Betty Rohac. They built their home in Alger Heights with a beauty shop they operated for twenty-five years and a State Wide Real Estate office Lloyd operated for about fifteen years. They loved ballroom and square dancing from Trenary to Florida and Arizona. They twice danced with Lawrence Welk in Chicago. They loved spending time together. Lloyd was heartbroken when his beautiful bride of almost sixty-three years died on March 5, 2004.
He is survived by nieces and nephews and his "adopted" family Ed and Cindy Hines and their children and grandchildren.
Graveside services for Lloyd D. and Gertie Miller will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham at 10:00 a.m. where the members of the Grand Island Masonic Lodge and American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will conduct services.
