Lois Z. Golisek

May 21, 1920 — February 28, 2014

On February 28, 2014, our family lost our dearest member - our mom, grandma, and aunt - Lois Zera Credland Golisek. She lived nearly 94 years with grace, dignity, independence, and a positive outlook on life and the world. With never a harsh word spoken, she exuded and inspired exceptional kindness, devotion to family, a love of history and the north woods. She loved children, reading, floral gardening, playing games - particularly card games and scrabble, cooking, and creating an aesthetically pleasing environment. Our mom loved the change of seasons and holidays, using every occasion as a reason to redecorate the house and cook a special meal. She, along with our dad, Carl Golisek, taught us the joy of gathering from the woods - mushrooms and berries, fish and game, as well as outdoor play and camping. Lois was the only child of Otha (Moyer) and Selby Credland and a lifelong resident of Munising, Michigan. She graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1938 and then worked for the Munising Paper Company until she married Carl Golisek in 1945. For many years she enjoyed working as a floral designer. She belonged to the MSU Home Extension "How-To Do Club" for 35 years, and volunteered for many community activities including Girl Scout and Boy Scout Leader. In the late 50's Lois and Carl bought property on Grand Island where the family built a camp and spent as much time as possible in the summers, playing in and on the water and exploring the island, with Lois continuing to enjoy caring for her family and entertaining friends. Carl and Lois spent 10 years traveling to Florida in the winter followed by 10 years spending part of the year in Alaska. They returned to their roots in Munising full time where every year up to age 89 Lois enjoyed a dip in the cold waters of Lake Superior to "frog around". Lois is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Carl, whom she continued to love and value to her dying day, her son David and infant daughter Carla, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Genevieve (Alfred) Trombly. Jenny (Ken) Percy, Theodore "Bud" Golisek, Argene Golisek; Lillian (Edward) Gerwatowski, Pearl "Tootsie" (Richard) Gerwatowski; and Rose Golisek. Lois is survived by her children; Michael (Sharon Borro), Jan (Ellen "Sue" Martin), Cynthia (Lou) Kustin, Debra (Richard) LaPlant, Rebecca (Luc) Marti, and Lisa (Jerry) Nankervis; grandchildren Michael Carl (Angela) Golisek, Benjamin (Yumi) Golisek, Jan Golisek Jr. (Tina Mannisto), Nancy (Terry) Beauchaine, Brenda (Howard Jr.) Mannisto, Deseree (Shawn) Bosley, Jessica (Kent) McCord, Lori (Normand) Carey, Elise (Brian) Hodges, Erick LaPlant, Carl (Valerie) LaPlant, Lucille Marti, Alexandre Marti, Ian Nankervis and Elliot Nankervis; 22 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Cibble Golisek and life long family friend Agnes St.Amour. Lois's children invite friends and extended family to a visiting hour followed by a prayer service officiated by Father Christopher Gardiner at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The service will begin at 4:00 p.m. ****Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.
