Chatham
I. Lois Maki, age 83, of Chatham, died peacefully with her children at her side on Sunday evening, December 28, 2014 at the Cypress Manor Health Center in Hancock, Michigan. She was born on June 4, 1931 in Chatham to the late Matti and Linne (Lintula) Kamppinen and graduated from Eben High School in 1949. Lois worked at the Chatham Telephone Company and then on August 26, 1950, she married G. Richard "Dick" Maki and together they raised their two children. In 1964, Lois went to work at the Chatham Co-op in the produce department. She retired as the produce manager in 1988. Lois and Dick were married over forty years when he preceded her in death on October 28, 1990. Lois was a faithful and active member of the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church. In her younger years, she enjoyed cross country skiing and bowling on the "Hits and Misses" bowling team. Lois also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and she was a great supporter of Superior Central Cougars sporting events.
She is survived by her children - Dale (Monica) Maki of Houghton and Lisa (Todd Gqiba) Maki of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren - Jacob Maki, Amanda (Tony) Malik, Aaron (Mercedes) Maki, and twins Abrah Maki and Caleb Maki; four great-grandchildren - Gabrielle, Amelia, Ilah, and Eero; her beloved sister and caregiver for the past three years - Bertha Nix of Chatham; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dick, and her sisters and brothers-in-law - Hilda (George) Wanska, Aili (Larry) Luoma, Anne (George) Hallstrom, Helmi (Elmer) Wanska, Inez (Walter) Seppanen, Helen (Fred) Ketchum, L. Elaine (Leslie) Latvala, Ruth Gohl, Lorraine (Richard) Horwood, Harold Johnson, and Warren Nix.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and also at the church on Thursday from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Roger Kangas will conduct Lois' funeral at the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. She will be escorted by James Seppanen, George Wanska, Kenny Hallstrom, Gary Horwood, Jeff Gohl, and Jesse Chartier. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 5:00 PM
