Trenary
Malcolm Lathrop Thompson, age 96, of Trenary, died early Tuesday evening, July 8, 2014 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born in Lathrop, Michigan on October 27, 1917 to Art and Hazel (Haward) Thompson. Malcolm attended grade school in Osier and then high school in Trenary where he played basketball and ran track. Malcolm went to work in the woods and worked as a heavy equipment operator in the U.P., Montana, and Idaho. He married Elizabeth "Libby" McNally on November 27, 1938 and they raised their three children. Malcolm loved working the family's beef farm. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, riding his three wheeler, reading Louis L'Amour westerns, cheering for the Detroit Tigers, listening to old country music, and most recently just sitting at the farm. Malcolm and Libby moved to Tendercare in Munising in 2003. Libby preceded him in death on December 14, 2004 after more than sixty-six years of marriage. Malcolm continued living at Tendercare where he made many friends with the residents and the caregivers. He was a good man, he was never mean, and Malcolm enjoyed helping people.
He is survived by his children - Walter M. (Janet) Thompson of Trenary, Charles L. (Sandra) Thompson of Rapid River, and Elizabeth (Bob Case) Thompson of Munising; grandchildren - Robin Seymour, Ellen (Dan) Kotowski, Sharon Trobridge, Walter (Becky Pilon) Thompson, Jr., Jennifer (Bill) Cornish, Jon (Shannon Carr) Thompson, Tate (Marnell) Thompson, Mike (Stephanie) Pins; great-grandchildren - Matt, Marcus, Mackenzie, Nick, Andy, Daniel, Justin, Adam, Caitlin, Evan, Maci, Dylan, Garrett, Samantha, Christopher, Jeffrey, and Kelsey; great-great grandson Carter; numerous nieces and nephews; and longtime family friend - Meredith Stine. Malcolm was preceded in death by his parents, wife Libby, brothers Orin and Fredric Thompson, and sister Olive Crick.
Services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct Malcolm's funeral service in the funeral home's chapel at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Limestone Township Cemetery in Limestone and he will be escorted by his sons and grandsons.
