Marcella Berard (Schroeder) Dugas, age 91, of Alger Heights Road, Munising, died under the loving care of her family and North Woods Hospice on Saturday, October 17, 2009. She was alert and able to enjoy and celebrate her 91st birthday on Friday evening with her family around her. Marcella was born on October 16, 1918 in Durand, Michigan to the late Joseph and Mary (Brooker) Schroeder. She graduated from Sacred Heart School and then Wm. G. Mather High School in 1936. After school, Marcella waitressed at the William's Grand Island Hotel and Resort. On October 5, 1938, she married the love of her life, Gilbert F. Dugas and together they raised two girls and three boys while building and operating their motel known as the Gil-Mar Motel on Munising Avenue. Marcella was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church where she served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister. She belonged to and was an officer of the Lady Foresters for over sixty years, a member of St. Anthony's Guild, and of St. Christopher's Circle. In her retirement years, Marcella volunteered at the St. Vincent De Paul store and the Senior Center. She loved spending time with her extended family, especially on the 4th of July when her house would be filled with grown-ups and children, and where she could always be seen on Madigan's corner during the annual parade.

Marcella is survived by her daughter - Elizabeth (Bill) Lancour of Escanaba; sons - John (Jean) Dugas of Munising, David (Susan) Dugas of Appleton, WI, and Michael (Charlotte) Dugas of Munising; son-in-law - Michael Bianchetti of Baton Rouge, LA; twelve grandchildren - Deborah, Lynn, Michael, William, Jaimee, Shannon, Tracie, Amanda, Micheal, Sarah, Christopher, and Brian; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchildren; brother - Clarence Schroeder; four sisters-in-law - Helen and Mary Schroeder, Lillian Krajewski, and Carole Mayotte; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of sixty-five years, Gil; their daughter - Mary Lou Bianchetti; and two brothers - Marshall and Joe Schroeder.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner at Sacred Heart Church on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Marcella may be made to the Sacred Heart Elevator Fund.
