Munising Marie G. Gatiss, age 90, of 316 E. Jewell Street, Munising, died on Saturday evening, October 8, 2011 at the Harbour View Assisted Living Center in Munising. She was born in Ishpeming on December 10, 1920 to Thomas and Nellie (Trahey) Welsh. Marie graduated from Ishpeming High School and attended Normal Northern College of Teaching. After graduation, Marie began her teaching career in Munising. She worked for a few years at the Alger County Court House in the Social Services Department and returned to teaching when Mr. MacNeil asked her to come back. Marie taught freshman English for many years before retiring in 1980. She had married John Howard "Jack" Gatiss II on September 21, 1946. They were married over thirty-four years when he preceded her in death on July 10, 1981. Marie was member of Sacred Heart Church, St. Bridget's Circle, the Munising Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, Alger Historical Society and MARSP (Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.) She and Jack enjoyed golfing and she was a member at Pictured Rocks for many years. Marie was an avid reader, enjoyed playing 500, and cheered on the Detroit Tigers and Green Bay Packers. She loved her family and enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law - Tom and Raenel Gatiss of Wetmore; grandchildren - Brian Gatiss, Kimberly (Jason) Gatiss-Funnell, John Gatiss IV and William "Billy" Gatiss; great-grandchildren - Andrew Funnell, Brady Funnell and Karsyn Gatiss; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, son and daughter-in-law Jack and Carol Gatiss, sister Eleanor Paull and brothers Joseph, Robert and Donald Welsh. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. She will be escorted by Michael Welsh, Don Welsh, Bob Welsh, Rick Gatiss, Brian Gatiss and Jason Funnell. Memorials in memory of Marie are requested to the Sacred Heart Church Capital Campaign.
