Munising / White Lake, MI
Mary Margaret "Micky" Balog, age 71, of Munising and formerly of White Lake, MI, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the UP Health Systems - Marquette with her family and friends at her side following a brief illness. She was born on February 29, 1944 in Pontiac, Michigan to the late Joseph and Margaret (Donohue) Wilhelm. Micky graduated from St. Michael's High School in Pontiac then went on to graduate from Northern Michigan University with a Nursing Degree. While working as a surgical nurse at the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital she met a surgical resident by the name of Joseph Andrew Balog. On July 9, 1966 they were married and together they raised their two children. Micky and Joe did everything together: golfing, hunting, traveling anywhere they could, playing with grandchildren, and going to their beloved Red Wings and Tigers games. After Joe's death in 2005, Micky moved north to a town that she loved traveling to, Munising. She quickly made this her new home. Micky worked for Pictured Rocks Cruises and for Madigan's Hardware. She was a member of the Munising Moose Lodge, where she volunteered for numerous community fundraisers and events, and could often be found causing trouble with Charlie, Dorothy, Nancy, Delores, and her entire Moose family. Micky also found that she loved to cook after moving to he UP, and was trying to master the art of the pasty.
Micky always put family first, but was also very proud of her charitable, social, and hospital roles: President Auxiliary to the American Osteopathic Association, President Auxiliary to the Michigan Osteopathic Association (twice), President of the Oakland County Osteopathic Auxiliary Association, Chairman and Co-Chairman of the WTVS, Channel 56 Auction, and President of the Sylvan Lake Branch Women's National Farm and Garden.
She is survived by her children - Rebecca Thie of Lapeer, MI and Tom (Molly) Balog of Shelby Township, MI; grandchildren - Michael and Alyssa Thie, and Travis and Madeline Balog; sisters - JoAnn (Gordon) Kurlonko, Elizabeth (Mike) Silta, and Marion Danielson; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Micky was preceded in death by her parents - Joseph and Margaret; husband - Dr. Joseph Balog, D.O.; sister - Cathy Wilhelm; and brothers-in-law - David Danielson and Hidezo "Fuji" Fujiwara.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday, March 19, 2015 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Deacon Tom Moseley will conduct Micky's Memorial Service at the funeral home at 6:00 p.m. Fellowship will follow at the Munising Moose Lodge.
