Mary Emily Dempsey "Mrs. D", age 80, of Grand Marais, died Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette after her courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 22, 1932 in Zanesville, Ohio to the late Park G. and Elizabeth (Donahey) Ogden. Mary graduated from Toronto High School in 1950 and attended Penn State to become a lab tech. for a local Toronto, Ohio hospital. She moved to Grand Marais in 1975 after summering there for many years with her parents and family. Mary worked as a librarian in the Grand Marais School from 1979 until 1986 where she was lovingly known as Mrs. "D". She was a very talented artist, making many sculptures, dolls, drawings, watercolors, and paintings. Mary loved going to the beach to swim, playing BINGO and she loved her scratch off lottery tickets because "You never know when it is going to be your lucky day".
She is survived by her seven children - David (Patty) Dempsey of Westerville, OH, Donny "Cowboy" (Carolyn "Faye") Dempsey of Murphy, NC, Diane (Ned) Stancliff of Naples, FL, Donna (Frans) Roos of Netherlands, Jane (Mickey) Whitney of McDavid, FL, Georgia Dempsey (husband Jon Bowles) of Three Rivers, CA, and Ed "Tiger" (Mikki) Dempsey of Negaunee; twelve grandchildren - David, Lorraine, Dain, Jessica, Josh, Anita, Erica, Ged, Marah, Alex, Lynsee and Caylee; four great-grandchildren with one on the way; beloved brother - Ed (Florence "Honey") Ogden of Venice, FL (and Grand Marais); sister-in-law - Mi Ogden of Sandusky, OH; numerous very special nieces and nephews as well as three special friends and care givers Michelle Galla, Diane Miller and Gerri Connors. Mary was preceded in death by her parents - Park and Elizabeth; late husband - George E. Dempsey, Jr.; brothers - Park G. (Janet) Ogden, Jr. and Donald E. Ogden; and very dear friend and niece Candy Smyth.
There are no public services planned at this time; the family is having a future "Dempsey Get-Together" to celebrate Mary's life.
