Munising
Melvin "Mel" E. Montie, age 77, of Clarkston, Michigan and summer resident of Sixteen Mile Lake, Munising, died unexpectedly following a brief illness Wednesday morning, July 14, 2010 at Marquette General Hospital with his loving wife at his side. He was born on March 9, 1933 in Hartford, Connecticut and moved to Michigan as a young boy. After graduating from high school, Mel joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served on the U.S.S. Intrepid during the Korean War. He attended Michigan State University on the G.I. Bill and graduated from there with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. In the summer 1970, he met Julie A. Koch while hanging out at the pool. They spent the summer sailing Lake St. Clair in his wooden sailboat and they were married on June 24, 1972. Mel's work history included employment by Pontiac Motors, L.T.V., Rockwell International in their automotive industry and then Textron. He retired from Textron as Sales Manager in 1990. Mel and Julie enjoyed traveling together and made many trips out East to visit family; they enjoyed many trips through Mel's work, and travelled around Lake Superior. On a trip to Copper Harbor, they stopped in Munising and purchased their camp on Sixteen Mile Lake. When Julie retired in 1997, they spent their summers here and this is where Mel's heart belonged. Mel loved the outdoors, riding his ATV, fishing with friends, and life with Julie. They had many dogs in their family and Mel was especially fond of his rescued Airedale, Rowdy.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of over thirty-eight years - Julie; brothers - Irwin (Sharon) Blake and Robert (Marie) Montie; two nieces Rebecca and Karin; one nephew Scott; and many, many friends. Mel was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude (nee Meadows) Blake.
