Munising

Michael “Mike”  L. Hayes, age 80, of Munising, died late Friday morning, August 18, 2017 in the emergency room at Munising Memorial Hospital.  He was born in Lansing on August 30, 1936 to John and Mildred (VanFleet) Hayes.  His family moved to Marquette when he was two and Mike was raised in Marquette.  He graduated from Bishop Baraga High School and then from Ferris State University where he earned his degree in Pharmacy.   Mike came to Munising to serve his apprenticeship at Farrell’s Drug Store.  In 1962, he purchased the store and owned and operated Hayes’ Drug Store until his retirement in 1996.  Mike worked hard to support his family and to serve the community’s needs.  There were very few days during his career that he did not go to the store to work or help someone in need.  The community enjoyed the friendship, advice, and harassment that Mike would give to his customers.  Mike married Jean (Moe) Cromell on March 11, 1978 and together they raised their “Brady Bunch” family.  He was a member of Eden Lutheran Church and Pictured Rocks Golf Club and a former member of the Munising Lions Club, Michigan Pharmacy Association, and Chamber of Commerce.  Mike enjoyed rabbit hunting (especially with his sons on Sundays), golfing, and bowling.  He and Jean spent their winters in Florida during retirement and they both enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  Mike had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by those who loved him.

He is survived by his wife of over thirty-nine years – Jean Hayes of Munising; their children – Kathleen (Al) Quattrin of Munising, Michael (Indol) Hayes of Rochester Hills, MI, John (Lisa) Cromell of Munising, Patrick Hayes of Chippewa Falls, WI, Wayne (Candy) Cromell of Grand Junction, CO, and Sean (Jamie) Hayes of Munising; twenty-one grandchildren – Alan, Kelly, Daniel, Megan, Emily, Nathan, Edward, Christopher, Jessica, Zoe, Summer, Dylan, Evan, Nick, Ryan, Eric, Olivia, Brooklyn, Sean, Cody, and Abbie; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild on the way.  Mike was preceded in death by his parents John and Mildred, his daughter Lori Hayes in 2010, grandson Benjamin Hayes in 2013, granddaughter Jennifer Hayes in 1980, his brother Patrick Hayes, and parents-in-law Arneth and Sylvia Moe.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 from 12:00 noon until 2:30 p.m.   Pastor Ann Gonyea will conduct Mike’s funeral service at Eden Lutheran Church in Munising on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.    Mike will be escorted by his grandsons - Sean Joseph, Cody, Nathan, Evan, Dylan, Ryan, Daniel.
