Munising
Michael "Boomer" Niemi, age 58, of Munising, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, November 7, 2013. Mike was born on August 10, 1955 to Leslie and Betty (Sjostrand) Niemi in Marquette, Michigan. He was a graduate of Wm. G. Mather High School in Munising Class of 1973. Mike married Patty VanLandschoot on August 30, 1980 and together they raised their two children. Mike worked at Harthow for eleven years starting on the green chain and moving on to heavy equipment operator. In 1986, he started his employment with the City of Munising as a fire truck driver. He then worked in the water department for many years before becoming a lab technician in the waste water treatment plant. In his younger years, Mike enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball; this is where he received the nickname "Boomer". Mike enjoyed reading, the Tigers, captaining the pontoon, photography, and music; recently teaching himself how to play the guitar. Family was everything to Mike, he was always happiest when he was with Patty, their kids, and grandson Jackson.
He is survived by his wife of over thirty-three years - Patty Niemi of Munising; daughter and son-in-law - Nicole and Joe Lasak of Munising; son - Jaden Niemi of Munising; grandson - Jackson Lasak; father - Rev. Les (Marcia) Niemi of AuTrain; brothers - Daniel (Tanya) Niemi of Marquette and Nathan (Laurel Bonner-) Niemi of AuTrain; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his mother - Betty, and grandparents - Ellen and Hugo Sjostrand and Pearl and Ed Niemi.
Visitation will be on Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m. Mike's Funeral Service will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Paul Kelto officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Jim St.Amour, Jim Gariepy, John Gariepy, Mark Sadak, Rick Ake, Scott "Dode" VanLandschoot, and Albert Benson.
