Norman Lee Hancock

Norman Lee Hancock, age 67, of Shingleton and formerly of Wetmore, died on Friday, June 30, 2017 at the UPHP Marquette Emergency Room.  He was born on October 21, 1949 at his family’s home in Wetmore to the late Charles and Betty (Smith) Hancock.  Norm grew up in Wetmore, attended Munising High School, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps.  He served in Vietnam and earned the Combat Action, National Defense Service, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Viet Nam Campaign, Good Conduct, and Marksmanship Medals and Badges.  When he returned home, Norm married Theresa Ann Dawson and together they raised their three children.  Norm went to work as a Corrections Officer for the State of Michigan and worked at Marquette and Alger Max.  He retired from the State in 2002 and then worked maintenance at the Superior Health Haven for many years.  Norm was a member of the American Legion and the U.P. Chiefs.  He enjoyed woodworking, deer and rabbit hunting, camping, and having pets in his home.

Norm is survived by his wife – Theresa Hancock; children – William (Stacee) Hancock of Milwaukee, Douglas (Shannon) Hancock of Chatham, Stacie (Jon) Tyner of Shingleton; six granddaughters; five grandsons; brother – Robert Hancock of Wetmore; sister – Tina Hancock of Wetmore; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Betty, parents-in-law Carl and Marjorie Dawson, and siblings Sheena Nesberg, Charles Hancock, Jr., Nancy Powell, Christina Hancock, and William Hancock.

Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard on Friday, July 7, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore.  A gathering with family and friends will take place on Friday at the Munising Township Hall in Wetmore from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.
