Munising

Patrick “Pat” C. Dowd, age 53, of Munising, died Thursday, June 22, 2017 at his home under the loving care of his family and North Woods Home Hospice. He was born on January 14, 1964 in Port Huron, Michigan to William and Janet (Paeth) Dowd.  Patrick graduated from Ironwood Catholic High School in 1982.  He then went to vocational school at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau.  Patrick worked as a machinist for Remmele Engineering in Minnesota.  He decided to go back to school at Gogebic Community College and in 1996, Patrick earned his degree and became a Registered Nurse.  His first nursing job was at Tendercare Health Center in Munising, this is where Patrick became a kind, caring, and great nurse. Patrick also worked as a pediatrics and NICU nurse in Green Bay for eight years, then at Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley, WI for two years before returning to Munising to work at Tendercare until his health no longer would allow him in 2016.

Tendercare was also where he met Renee Babcock, and on March 26, 2001 they were married, and together they raised their two sons R.J. and Cody.  Patrick treated Renee like gold, and would fight with his mother-in-law to see who could spoil her more.  They enjoyed hiking in the woods, taking the dogs for walks on the beach, watching endless numbers of movies, camping across the U.P., and wandering the aisle at Menards looking for ideas for their next home improvement.  Patrick also enjoyed buying, selling, and trading many things.  He was not always looking for the best buy, but would get things he knew friends and family needed, knowing he wasn’t getting what he paid for it back.  Many of his deals revolved around technology items, because Patrick was a computer whiz.  He was often helping people fix their computer, or even building his own.  Patrick trained in Jeet Kune Do, a martial art that he enjoyed sharing self-defense moves with his family.  He also enjoyed riding his bike, including rides to Marquette and a 100-mile trek with his brother Barry.

Family was very important to Patrick.  He loved spending time with them and would travel at the spur of a moment to be near them.  Staying up late with the boys watching movies and drinking pickle juice were always cherished times.

Patrick is survived by his wife of fifteen years – Renee Dowd of Munising; sons – R.J. and Cody; parents - Bill and Janet Dowd of Iron River; siblings – Bill (Susanne) Dowd of Jacksonville, FL, Bob Dowd of Ironwood, Barry Dowd of Honolulu, HI, Carol Nickel of Saxon, WI, Mike Dowd of Chicago, Kathleen (Carl) Lemon of Port Huron, MI, James (Kirsten) Dowd Hurley, WI, John (Lisa Hanosano) Dowd of Perrysburg, OH, Irene Anderson, of Iron River; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents Irene and Joe Mockridge and John and Joyce Dowd.

Visitation will be on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Patrick’s memorial service and time for remembrances will begin at 3:00 p.m.  Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
