Christmas
Paul L. Erickson, age 83, of Christmas, Michigan died following a three-month illness on Monday morning, June 23, 2014 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan, under the care of the Jacobetti caregivers and Lake Superior Hospice. He was born on July 5, 1930 in Munising to Elmer and Hildur (Rundquist) Erickson. During high school, Paul attended Boys State at Michigan State University and he graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1948. He worked in the woods as a logger, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 until 1953. Paul attended Northern Michigan University, and continued to work in the woods. While at Northern, he met Patricia A. Mahlberg from Iron Mountain, and they were married on July 15, 1960. Paul worked part-time for the U.S. Postal Service during days, and was a commercial fisherman by night. He worked both jobs for a few years, until he went to work full-time for the Munising Post Office. Paul is fondly remembered by many as their window clerk from 1966 until 1992. Throughout his career and retirement, Paul loved the area so much, that he rarely left his Zip Code. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the U.S.M.C. League, for which he was an Adjutant. Paul enjoyed reading many newspapers, and read cookbooks like they were novels. He was passionate about cooking, and talented and experimental in the kitchen. During his retirement, he enjoyed his househusband duties and did housework only his way. Paul also was creative and enjoyed building and painting things. He could grow anything in his garden and truly appreciated nature and our four seasons.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 54 years - Pat Erickson of Christmas; their children - Kristine Erickson of Traverse City, MI and Hans (Sara) Erickson of Niskayuna, NY; grandchildren - Samantha and Christopher; sister - Elmere (Robert) Sloan of Roque Bluffs, ME; and several cousins. Paul was preceded in death by his brothers, Russell and Carl, and his parents.
Services will be held at Eden Evangelical Lutheran Church in Munising on Friday, June 27, 2014. Visiting time with family and friends will take place from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Pastor Elisabeth Daniels will conduct Paul's memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guards will conduct military honors.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Northwoods Hospice and Lake Superior Hospice.
