Barbara "Peggy" Jean St. Amour, age 81, of Powell Lake, passed quietly surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Marquette General. Peggy was born on February 17, 1929 to Bert and Iva Chase in Munising. She graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1947. Peggy was employed at Munising Paper Company after she graduated from high school until she started her family.
On July 9, 1949 she married Edward Robert (Bob) St. Amour. Peggy loved to share the story of how she and her "Hooty" got married. In 1952 they moved to Walnut street (the house with the tunnel) where they raised their seven children and moved to Powell Lake in 1976. Peggy is best remembered for being a devoted wife and mother. Anyone who knew Peggy knows she truly loved spending time with children - it didn't matter who they were she was there to care for all of them. Friends and family always looked forward to Peggy's cookies, sweet rolls and breads. When you visited with Peggy you always were treated to stories of her life - playing the clarinet in the school band, things she did with her school chums, "Kettle" parties and the sing-along's at the lake, time at their camp at Miner's Beach, picking blueberries with the bear tagging along, snowmobiling, and many stories about her family. Her photo albums are evidence of what was important to her - each filled with photos of loved ones and every picture carefully marked with names and dates. Peggy loved living at Powell Lake and every evening at 7:00 sharp she and Hoot would take their summer pontoon ride around the lake, with their neighbors Dave and Rhonda Munn, being their first stop. Every family gathering everyone would climb aboard for the ride. At 81, Peggy still enjoyed her walks with her walking companion Rhonda around the lake. Peg was a member of the United Methodist Church in Munising for many years, and also attended Sacred Heart Church with Hoot.
She is survived by her husband of sixty years Bob "Hoot"; seven children - Kathy (Ted) Covey of Adrian, Michigan, Robert (Deedee) of Munising, John (Brenda) of Munising, Jim (Carol) of Munising, Carol (Keith) Santti of Crystal River, Florida, Judy (Walt) Davis of Skandia, and Gary (Theresa) of Munising; 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren with one more on the way; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters Murph (Wally) Wallenstein, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Kate Matheny, Fountain Valley, California, and Nancy Murray of Munising; sister-in-laws Irene, Ag, and Eileen. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and sister Lois Ryan.
There will be a celebration of Peg's life with family and friends from 5pm to 8pm at Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Tuesday, May 11th. Father Chris Gardiner will conduct a memorial service at Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. with a luncheon following at the United Methodist Church. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
