Phyllis Marie Brock, age 68, of Munising, died following a brief and unexpected illness on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at UPHS Marquette. She was born in Manistique, Michigan to the late Philip “Bear” and Loretta (Deloria) Maynard. Phyllis grew up in Munising and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1967. She went to work at Kimberly Clark and began raising her family. Phyllis then went to work in the kitchens of numerous restaurants in Alger County including the Waterfront, Apple Betty’s, the Moose Lodge, and Muldoons. It is fair to say she was one of Alger County’s finest. She began employment with the Munising Public Schools as a cook and served generations of students her “World Famous” torpedoes. Phyllis was the cook’s coordinator and was employed by the school for thirty-six years. While working, she attended Northern Michigan University and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Phyllis married Wayne “Chum” Brock in 1988 and together they owned and operated the Country Connection for twenty-eight years. Phyllis was an extremely hard working woman with a kind and generous heart. She made thousands of pasties, catered weddings, and helped with fund raisers for any community member in need. Phyllis didn’t have a lot of free time, but when she did, she enjoyed spending it with Chum. She and Chum would take rides, spend a little bit of time at the casino, and travelled together. Phyllis was a wonderful, loving and fun grandmother. Phyllis loved kids… period... and their “Little Face.”
She is survived by her husband – Chum Brock of Wetmore; children – Todd (Paula) Brock, Shaun “Stub” (Rena) Brock, Theresa (Wayne) Koenig all of Munising, Rochelle (Bob) Hannah of Wetmore, Wayne (Stacy) Brock, Scott (Laura) Brock all of Iron Mountain, Sheri (Al) Quattrin of Virginia, and LePrel Morrison of Munising who was not Phyllis’ daughter, but grew up with her as a loving and supportive parent figure, friend, confidant, co-worker and boss; twenty-four grandchildren – Eric, Leanne, Brent, Amy, Kris, Shaun Jr., Kenzie, Dillon, Gabi, Jordan, Olivia, Leslie, Brett, Josh, Denae, Nicholas, Kent, Samantha, Maggie, Alice, Katie, Kristopher, Amber, and Chelsey; seven great-grandchildren; brother – Randy Maynard of Holland; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and Little Faces; and her “beastly” dog Bella. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Edward and James Maynard, sister Shirley DesArmo, and granddaughter Bridget Brock.
Services will be held at the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising on Monday, January 15, 2018. Visiting time with family and friends will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Pastor Ann Gonyea will conduct Phyllis’ memorial service at 5:00 p.m.
