Munising
Raymond A. Ranta, age 81, of 312 E. Onota Street, Munising, died unexpectedly while sleeping early Tuesday morning, January 20, 2009. He was born on May 24, 1927 in Chatham to the late Urho and Hilma (Niemi) Ranta. Ray went to school in Chatham and then graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Ray married Dorlene M. Mitchell on August 28, 1954. His employment at Kimberly Clark started in 1948 in the Beater Room. Ray worked in the log yard and in the Specialties Department as a sizeman, third hand, and assistant operator. On January 30, 1953 he posted into the Engineering Department as an instrument repairman. Ray retired from the mill on January 1, 1988. He was a member of the Conservation Club and he loved hunting and spending time at camp on Nevins Lake. Ray loved taking rides in the woods and he loved the Kingston Plains - even the mud holes.
Ray is survived by his wife of over 54 years - Dorlene of Munising; four children - Bonnie Ranta of Georgia, Cindy (Anthony) LaMunyon of Indiana, Randy Ranta of Illinois,and Cathy Vertz of Georgia; six grandchildren - Amy, Stevie, Angela, Nicole, Lindsey, and Jamie; 15 great grandchildren; brother Gus; and sister Lil. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Carl Ranta and Elsie Johnson.
