Richard "Bing" Kenneth Nelson

Richard K. “Bing” Nelson, age 94, of Sundell, died early Friday morning, June 28, 2024 at Medilodge in Munising. He was born in Sundell, Michigan at his family home on September 18, 1929 to the late Richard and Sylvia (Aho) Nelson. Bing started working at a young age at the Verbrihgee potato farm. He married Mary B. Koch on July 22, 1950 and together they raised their four daughters. Bing worked construction for many years before working at the mines. He started underground at the Mather B Mine and then became a heavy equipment operator at the Tilden. Bing enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing in his boat on Lake Superior. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed learning about forestry and mining, staying up to date with his daily Mining Journal, reminiscing with a Good Old Days Magazine, and finding the “truth” in the Enquirer. Bing also spent a lot of time in his multiple vegetable gardens, he was still planting into his late 80s. Bing and Mary loved going for rides. They loved to go visit family and friends and looked forward to finding a good place to eat out for dinner.

 Bing is survived by his four daughters and sons-in-law – Martha and Frank Inman of Chatham, Kathy and Tony Knaus of Traunik, Alice and Gary “Buck” Lancour of Chatham, and Elaine and Tom Taskey of Chatham; grandchildren – Frank, Brian (Michelle), Ryan (Christy), Brad (Brooke), Craig (David), Brent, Danielle (Scott), Heather (Pat), and Kurston; thirteen great-grandchildren; siblings – Rita LeMaire and Robert “Hub” (Joyce) Nelson; brother and sisters-in-law – Ora Koch, Carolyn Nelson, and Flora Leppanen; many special nieces and nephews, especially his caring niece - Vickie Nelson. Bing was preceded in death by his wife – Mary “Mya” Nelson, parents – Richard and Sylvia; grandson – Justin Taskey; siblings – Billy (Jenny) Nelson, Edwin Nelson, Sharon (Herb) Burdick, Marina (Frank) Krajewski, and Pasty Nelson.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
