Richard "Rick" David Carr

Richard "Rick" David Carr, age 63, of Christmas, died in Christmas on Saturday evening, February 11, 2012 following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 11, 1948 in Munising, Michigan to the late Frank and Irma (Kumpu) Carr. Rick graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School and then Wm. G. Mather High School with the class of 1966. He then completed his Bachelor's Degree from Northern Michigan University in 1971 and then earned his Juris Doctorate from Cooley Law School in 1978. Rick worked in Lansing from 1978 until 1985 consulting for unions. He married his Cooley Law School classmate Jeanne A. Bates on October 4 1980. In 1986 Rick moved back to Munising and started his private law practice, often working on a barter system for those who couldn't pay. In 1989 he was instrumental in starting the Independent Truckers Association with local truckers and served as ITA's general counsel. Rick started and ran Carr Lake Development, Inc. in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion Post 131 and the Munising Moose Lodge. Rick enjoyed wood carving, coin collecting, deer hunting, and his cat Squeaky.
He is survived by his Brother Bernard (Karen) Carr of Houghton MI; sister-in-law Susan Carr of Christmas; niece Amy Carr of Macomb IL, nephew Frank A. (Rosa) Carr of Elko NV, three great nieces Rachelle, Savanna and Alysia; one grandnephew Brett; and close friends Bob and Mary Jo Gibbons of Christmas. Rick was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Irma Carr, brother Kenneth J. Carr, and Jeanne Bates.
Graveside services will be at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain, Michigan on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. The American Legion and Vietnam Veterans of America Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
