Richard Warren Carroll, Sr

Richard Warren Carroll, Sr., age 87, of 209 Rosemary Lane, Newberry died at his home on Wednesday, June 18, 2008. He was born on December 25, 1920 in Iron Mountain to the late Claby and Cecilia (Quinn) Carroll and attended school in McMillan. Richard worked in the woods and in Higland Park, MI and Waukegan, IL. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Platoon Sergeant during WWII. Richard was in the Asiatic Pacific and participated in action against the Japanese on New Guinea; Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa. He was wounded on September 29, 1944 in Peleliu and received the Purple Heart Medal and an individual Bronze Star. Richard went to Detroit / Royal Oak and worked for Wilbert Burial Vault for six years and then for a truck body company for four years before returning home to Newberry. He worked for twenty-eight years at the Newberry State Hospital and retired from there on January 2, 1983. Richard married Margaret Henion and she preceded him in death. He enjoyed traveling, spending time at his cottage north of Newberry, fishing, and woodworking. Richard was a Life Member of the VFW and American Legion Post #74 in Newberry and was also a member of the Newberry Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his son - Richard (Tina) Carroll, Jr. of Chatham; daughter - Judy Blakley of Newberry; grandchildren - Rick, Carrie, Laura, Conrad, Christine, Katherine, Jacob, and Isabelle; brothers - Robert Carroll of Flint, and Wallace Carroll of Santa Cruz, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews; Richard was also preceded in death by his brothers - Garland Carroll and Gerald Carroll; sisters - Betty Genroeu and Judy Bessler.

A memorial service will be held at the American Legion Post #74 in Newberry on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 12:00 noon, with interment at the Forest Home Cemetery immediately following the service.
