AuTrain Richard "Dick" Horwood, age 81, of AuTrain, died Thursday, February 27, 2014 under the loving care of the Living Moments Unit at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on July 15, 1932 in Marquette to the late Russell and Hazel (Sorenson) Horwood. Dick was raised between Chatham and East Lansing, and then graduated from Eben High School in 1951. He went to college for one year and then joined the U.S. Army. Dick was stationed in Japan during the Korean War as an Army Security Agent. After his discharge in 1955, he married Lorraine Kamppinen on November 12, 1955. Dick joined the Michigan State Police in 1956. His career in the State Police stationed him in St. Ignace from 1956 - 1960, Traverse City from 1960 - 1967, Munising from 1967 - 1968 and then Marquette from 1968 until 1987 as Lieutenant. He graduated from the Northwestern University Traffic Safety Program. Dick was a Boy Scout leader when his boys were younger, a member of the Chocolay Township Lions Club, President of the Marquette School Board and active with the Marquette Booster Club. Together, he and Lorraine enjoyed traveling in their motor home during the winter months to the Sunbelt states. They eventually purchased a place in Florida at a golf resort in Frostproof, Florida and enjoyed nine years there before ill health returned them to the Upper Peninsula to their summer home in AuTrain. Dick was a member of the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church. He enjoyed golfing in Florida, tinkering in his garage, family "Horwoodfest" get togethers at AuTrain Lake, where he treasured his grandchildren and family time. He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law - Richard and Kim Horwood of Okemos, MI, Gary and Lisa Horwood of Marquette, Michael and Anne Horwood of Maple Grove, MN and Steven and Laura Horwood of Saline, MI; eight grandchildren - Lindsay, Kayley, Kristen, Drew (fiancée Hannah), Paige, Eric, Allison and Alaina; brothers Robert (Pat) Horwood of Owosso, MI and Bill Horwood of Clare, MI; sisters-in-law Bertha Nix and Lois Maki of Chatham; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lorraine on August 31, 2011, and granddaughter Amy. Services will be held at the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 24, 2014. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Roger Kangas will conduct Dick's funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to the Living Moments Unit at Tendercare where Dick received years of loving care.
