Munising
Richard C. "Dick" Morrison, age 79, of Munising, died Friday morning, September 2, 2011 at his home, under the loving care of his family. He was born on June 6, 1932, in Munising to the late Everett and Mildred "Milly" (Vaughn) Morrison. Dick graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1950. After graduation he began his employment with the Munising Paper Company. On April 12, 1952 Dick married Jean I. Anderson. Only a few months later he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in 1954 as a Corporal, and resumed his work at the paper mill. Dick retired from Kimberly Clark on June 8, 1987 as the Tour Forman in the Specialties Department. Aside from his work at the mill, Dick worked at and was part owner of the Pictured Rocks Cruises. He started working there with his father at fourteen years old, and retired from the Cruises in 1999. Dick was an active member of the American Legion Post #131, Moose Lodge, and the Grand Island Masonic Lodge and Ahmed Shrine, where he served as the Head Worshipful Master and was the Mason of the Year. He gave a lot of his time and talents to his organizations, from building at wheelchair lift at the Legion, to constructing and selling his custom fish shacks to help pay for roof renovations at the Masonic Lodge, and he would always be seen selling the Masonic pasties in his pink hat. Dick enjoyed riding in the woods, cutting fire wood, working on the boats, and even doing a little agitating.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight year - Jean Morrison of Munising; daughters - Nancy (Lee Tannehill) Phillipson, Sally (Eric) Dahlgren, Mary (Jeff) Contreras all of Munsing, and Carol (Dave Manning) Howard of Huntington, IN; honorary son - Greg (Mary Ann) Anderson; grandchildren - Brandy Kurth, Sherry (Terry) Miller, C.J. Phillipson , Richard Beauchaine, Mindy (Rick) Murkowski, George Brisson, Cade and Emily Contreras; eight great-grandchildren; sister - Donna Brisson; brother - Robert "Bud" (Pat) Morrison; sisters-in-law - Dorothy Parker and Elenor Lufcy. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Milly; sister - Virginia "Honey" (Harold "Salty) Johnson; son-in-law - Chuck Phillipson; brother-in-law - Bernie Brisson; sisters-in-law - Collen (Claude) Ouellette and Shirley (Art) Denny.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Bowerman Funeral Home, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. Dick's services will begin with a Masonic service at 4:00 p.m. immediately followed by his funeral being conducted by Rev. Sandra J. Kolder. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery, where the American Legion Honor Guard and Alger County Veterans Council will conduct military.
