Trenary
Robert "Bob" Carlson, age 90, of Trenary, passed away peacefully at the Jacobetti VA Home for Veterans in Marquette on Thursday evening, August 21, 2014. Bob was born in Chatham, Michigan on February 17, 1924 to the late Carl and Christine (Eklund) Carlson. From 1943 through 1946, Bob served in the U.S. Army. He went overseas with the 87th Infantry Division and fought in France during the Battle of the Bulge. The 87th fought in the Ardennes, Rhineland (capturing Koblenz) and Central Europe. Bob was an active member of the Chatham V.F.W. and enjoyed travelling all over the U.S. to attend 87th Infantry reunions. Following his military service, Bob married Thelma Holmquist of Trenary on October 30, 1948 and they had a dairy farm in Limestone over twenty years. Bob also drove a milk truck for Michigan Milk Producers Association for twenty-seven years. Bob was active in community service in Trenary. He enjoyed serving with the Trenary Fire Department and the community building as a maintenance man. Working with others in the community, he was instrumental in bringing the medical clinic to the community building. Bob was an active member of the Trenary Methodist Church as an usher and the treasurer. Camping over the last twenty years at Bass Lake and AuTrain Basin was one of Bob and Thelma's greatest pleasures. They always made friends wherever they went, and Bob supplied the wood for all of the campfires. He enjoyed fishing and friends would bring their fish to Bob for him to filet. He always had great fish fries.
Bob is survived by his wife of over sixty-five years - Thelma; their daughters - Joyce (Mike) Matula of Marquette and Diane (Jim) Nelson of Menominee; sister - Lois Davis on Holland, MI; five grandchildren - Ryan (Amanda) Matula of Neenah, WI, Nikki (Burt) Clement of Ishpeming, James Nelson of Lansing, Amanda (Eric) Thompson of Clawson, and Annie (Nick) Nelson of Grand Rapids; great-grandchildren - Brendan and Emilea Matula of Neenah, Jadynn Clement of Ishpeming, and an expected baby in March; brothers and sisters-in-law - Ethel Holmquist, Keith (Dorothy) Holmquist, Bruce Holmquist, and Gene (Ruth) Holmquist. Bob was preceded in death by his parents - Charles and Christine Carlson and siblings - Richard, William, and Lawrence, Luella, Pauline, Betty, and their spouses.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church in Trenary on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Rev. Sandra Kolder will conduct Bob's funeral service at the Trenary Methodist Church on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 12:00 noon. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary where members of the Chatham V.F.W., American Legion, and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guards will conduct military honors. Bob will be escorted by his grandsons and son-in-law: Ryan Matula, Burt Clement, James Nelson, Eric Thompson, Nick Nelson, and Mike Matula.
