Shingleton
Robert A. Colbert, age 81, of N6110 Percy Road, Shingleton, died late Sunday morning, June 10, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 8, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Larry and Helen (Hummel) Colbert. Bob grew up in the Wayne, Garden City, and Dearborn areas. He joined the U.S. Navy on March 15, 1948 served on the U.S.S. Bairoko during the Korean War. Bob served in the Navy until March 14, 1952. He married Ruby Pearl Philpot on August 22, 1952 and together they raised their four children. Bob worked for Kaiser & Frazier and Burroughs in Plymouth before going to work for General Motors. Bob retired from G.M. on July 1, 1985 after thirty years of service. They lived in Muskegon for twenty years and were members of the Broadway Baptist Church. Bob was also a lifetime member of the D.A.V., American Legion, and V.F.W. He and Ruby have lived in the U.P. for three years. Bob loved being around people and enjoyed people watching. He was the "Father of the Neighborhood" in Garden City and Bob enjoyed camping and being by the water. He entertained children for years when he played Santa for the Garden City Park, Wayne Recreation Center, and the U.A.W.
Bob is survived by his wife of sixty years - Ruby; children - Robert (Kathleen) Colbert of Traverse City, MI, Wally Colbert of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Karla (Rich) Weaver of Shingleton, and Karol (Dave) Jacobs of Muskegon; eight grandchildren - Robert Helen, Amy, David, Joey, Ramie, Heather, and Brianna; eight great-grandchildren; and sister - Dorothy Allen of San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Larry Colbert.
