Munising
Robert "Dorny" Dorenbecker, age 89, of Birch Street, Munising, died Thursday, November 25, 2010, at the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on September 12, 1921 in Munising, to the late Jacob and Nettie (Hall) Dorenbecker. Dorny entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater; he served in a number of campaigns as a radio operator at Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines, and Po Valley. Dorny was honorably discharged in November of 1945. He married Lois M. Burrows on October 30, 1948. Dorny began his mill employment on June 17, 1942 as a Broke Handler in the Beater Room. He worked in various departments, and on September 29, 1948 he transferred to the Specialties Department as a Spare Hand progressing in the department to Operator #15. He was an Operator #18 Saturator at the time of his retirement. Dorny retired January 1, 1984 after completing over 41-1/2 years of continuous service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved to golf. Dorny also enjoyed traveling across the U.S. with his family, and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and cheering for the Lions, Red Wings, and Tigers.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law - Bobbi Jo and Thomas Bailey of Munising; granddaughters - Brianne Bailey of Munising, Blaine (B.J.) Johns of Jackson , MI; great-grandchildren - Tiffany Bailey, Damion Vanderschaegen, and Madison, Robert, and Brody Johns; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorny was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, grandson Brian Bailey, and brothers Jay and Adam, and sister Catherine.
Dorny's visitation will be on Saturday, December 4, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home. His funeral service will be conducted by Deacon Tom Moseley beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
