Grand Marais
Robert "Bob" Gardner, age 76, of Grand Marais, went home to be with his Lord early Saturday morning, May 30, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on August 18, 1932 in Highland Park, Michigan to Morley and Edith Gardner. Bob graduated from high school and joined the National Guard. He married Marilyn and together they raised five children. Bob was mostly self-employed in the furniture business. He helped furnish and was involved with many aspects of building the Pontiac Silverdome and also on Bay Valley in Bay City. Bob and Nancy were married on April 26, 1984. They retired from their furniture business and moved to their retirement home on Round Lake. Bob sold real estate for State Wide in Munising until God called him to be a pastor for the First Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. Bob was an integral part of the Grand Marais community. He served as Township Supervisor, was an Alger Delta Director, worked with the AMCAB Community Program, and the food pantry in Grand Marais. Bob worked, worked, worked, slept a little and worked some more. He enjoyed giving his time, talent and treasure in serving others. He served God by giving of himself.
Bob is survived by his wife of twenty-five years - Nancy; four children - Bonnie Wise, Kathleen Gardner, Mark (Judy) Gardner, and Karen (Scott) Lenning; step-children - Jennifer (Rob) Rottweiler and Brian (Gina) Birnbaum; sister - Mary; fifteen grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son James "Jimmy" in 1989, and sister Donna.
Services for Bob will be held at the First Lutheran Church in Grand Marais on Monday, June 1, 2009. Visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. and an ecumenical funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais.
