Robert & Lucy Pine

Grand Marais, MI / Dayton, OH  Robert "Bob" F. Pine, age 83, and Lucy A. Pine,, nee McNabb, age 79, of Grand Marais and formerly of Dayton, Ohio, died together, on Thursday, August 8, 2013, the result of an automobile accident.    Lucy was born in West Carrollton, Ohio on January 16, 1934. She grew up in West Carrollton, Ohio where she still has many childhood friends and graduated from West Carrollton High School in 1952. She then went on to the University of Dayton where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education and started her lifelong teaching career with the Dayton and Oakwood Public School Systems.    Bob was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 31, 1929. He grew up in Dayton and graduated from Fairview High School. Bob entered into the U.S. Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954. When he returned home, Bob completed his Bachelor's Degree in Business from Bowling Green State University.    The two of them met at the Dayton Ski Club and were married on August 5, 1967. Together they became the best parents imaginable to their three children. In the early 1960s Bob experienced the beauty of Grand Marais and as a family they vacationed there often. When they retired, Bob and Lucy made Grand Marias their permanent paradise. While in Grand Marais, Bob worked as the Harbor Master and Lucy was still the community's librarian where her knowledge and helpfulness is said to be irreplaceable. He enjoyed hiking and bird watching and she enjoyed playing cards and cooking. Lucy's enjoyment of cooking led to Bob's enjoyment of eating. Together they were nature lovers, avid readers, enjoyed watching movies, and were great companions.    Bob and Lucy are survived by their three children - Rob (Susan) Pine of Littleton, Colorado, Nancy Pine of Grand Marais, and Elizabeth (Ray Harriman) Pine of Traverse City; grandchildren - Dobbin Pine, Jerry and Molly Conner, Gwendolyn Mollica, Rachel and Stormi Winnie, Riley Harriman, and Robert Sykes; Lucy's brother - Clyde "Barry" (Marge) McNabb; Bob's siblings - David (Mary) Pine and Rosemary (Jim) Spindler; and many nieces and nephews. They were preceded in death by Lucy's parents - Frank McNabb and Dolores Lauterbach; Bob's parents - Robert and Eleanor Pine; and his sister - Patricia Pine and Laurie Smith.  A celebration memorial will be held at the Grand Marais Rec. Center in Grand Marais, MI on Thursday, August 15, 2013, from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. with a blessing and time for friends and family to share stories and remembrances at5:30. A memorial service will be held at Memorial United Methodist Church in West Carrollton, OH on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in West Carrollton City, OH.   In lieu of flowers memorials in Lucy's name may be sent to the Grand Marais Library c/o Mary Ellis Johnson, Local, Grand Marais, MI 49839, or in Bob's name to the U.P.
