Ronald M. Smithingell, age 65, of Munising, died Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Munising Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 2, 1946 to Leo and Edna (Grainger) Smithingell, in Flint, MI. Ron graduated from Byron High School in 1965. He worked many years on the family farm in Gaines. Ron went on to work for General Motors in the Flint plant for twenty seven years before retirement, also while working at GM Ron worked as a police officer in Argentine for ten years. He married Beverlie Ann (Portersfield) Cousineau in 1980. After retirement Ron and Bev moved to Munising. She preceded him in death in 1997. While in Munising, Ron worked for Madigan's Hardware. Ron was a member of the Grand Island Masonic Lodge and Ahmed Shrine, the Hiawathawland Farm Bureau, Munising Senior Center, and Munising Baptist Church. He liked to hunt, fish, four-wheel in the woods, and go blueberry picking.
Ron is survived by his four stepchildren - Cyndi (Dan) Hildebidle, Michael (Karen Cross) Cousineau, Ronald (Tracy) Cousineau, and Lisa (Brian) Pitcock; grandchildren - David and Darcey Hildebidle, Melissa (Keith Farley), Brandy (Todd) and Nicole Cousineau, E'Tienne and Jeneé Cousineau, and Lillian Pitcock; great-grandchildren - Madison and Zander; and special friend and advocate Elizabeth Rajala; aunt - Winnie Johnson; and cousins - Nancy Hieber, Jim and Jerry Johnson, Virginia Wenk, and Richard Hall.. He was preceded in death by his wife Bev and parents Leo and Edna.
Ron's visitation will be on Monday, June 20, 2011 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., with the Grand Island Masonic Lodge conducting a service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be visitation on Tuesday, June 21 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the Munising Baptist Church in Wetmore. Pastor Jason LaFlamme will conduct Ron's Funeral service beginning at 12:00 noon at the church. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.
