Roswell "Rossie" C. Anderson, age 99, of Munising, and more recently of Marquette, died Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Marquette General Hospital surrounded by, and under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice. He was born on November 4, 1912 in Crystal Falls, Michigan to the late Charles and Cicelia (Franquist) Anderson. Rossie spent his early years working with his family as a commercial fisherman. Rossie graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1930. On August 29, 1935 he married Pearl E. St. Amour, and they were married nearly seventy-three years when she preceded him in death on May 30, 2008. Rossie enlisted into the United States Navy on April 11, 1944. He was stationed aboard the USS Ascella (AK-137) where he was Motor Machinist Mate Third Class. Rossie worked both in the engine room and was an engineer aboard a landing craft that delivered supplies to other Naval ships, even getting a chance to make a delivery to his brother Alard's ship. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945 earning the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Ribbon. Just this September Rossie was privileged with traveling to Washington D.C. on an Honor Flight to bring Veterans to our capital to visit the national monuments and to be honored. Rossie worked for the CCC's; and later he and Pearl partnered in the retail gasoline and tourist trade, first when he operated Superior Storage, and after he returned from Naval service, they owned and operated the Anderson Service Station and Cabins, retiring in 1975. Rossie was a charter member and was involved in the opening of the Pictured Rocks Golf and Country Club. He loved to golf and hit a hole in one in 1976. Rossie also enjoyed playing cards with the guys, cribbage, listening to big band and country music, dancing, reading, "swimming" in and out at Powell Lake, watching the Packers, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren receiving official baby rocker status. He was member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Lions Club.
Rossie is survived by his children - Barbara (Bob) Losin of Saddlebrook, AZ, Deacon James (Joan) Anderson of Munising, Kristin "Kitty" (Dan) Flynn of Munising, Paul (Peggy) Anderson of Marquette, Eileen (Halldor) Egilsson of Menominee, MI, and Tina (Terry) Pihlainen of Deerton; sixteen grandchildren - Paul, Chris, Suzanne, Cecilia, Katie, Shaun, Tim, Kerry, John, Lissa, Steinunn, Kirsten, Roswell, Laura, Ann, and Amy; twenty-two great-grandchildren with two on the way; one great-great-grandchild; sisters-in-law - Helen and Marion Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents - Charles and Cicelia; son - Leonard; brothers - Marlin and Alard; sister - Melba Negilski; and great-granddaughter - Sarah Flynn.
A memorial Mass is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans of America Honor Guard will conduct military honors. In lieu of flowers memorials in Roswell's name may be made to the Sacred Heart Church Capital Campaign, Lake Superior Hospice, or the American Legion.
