Roy R. Graves, age 91, of 9722N Graves Road, died Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on August 2, 1919 in Hiawatha Township to the late Raymond and Mercy (Williams) Graves. Raised in the Hiawatha and Stueben areas, Roy attended school in Shingleton before entering the woods to work. Logging and lumber would become his lifelong career. He married Jean Marie Courter on October 1, 1941. Roy served from July 12, 1944 until January 31, 1946 in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was involved at the Southern Philippines battle and earned the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, the Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. After the War, Roy returned to logging. He built and operated Roy Graves Lumber Company for many years, retiring in the late 1980s. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Roy attended the Munising Baptist Church. He was a hard working man who enjoyed fishing, flowers and his garden.

Roy is survived by his wife of almost seventy years - Jean Graves; children - Gary (Cindy) Graves of Davisburg, MI, Gloria "Toni" (Bob) Kolbus of Munising, Jeanne Graves of Marquette and Sheila Graves of Munising; grandchildren - Kurt (Michelle), Kelly (Al), Scott, Suzanne, Tammy (Scott), Robbie (Kristine) and Brad (Kathy); numerous great-grandchildren; brothers - Bob (Hilda) Graves, Leslie "Joe" Graves and Donald (Judy) Graves; sisters - Mary Sanders, Mae (Leo) Anecki, Leona (Blair "Harry") Kroupa and Pat (Harlin) Buchman; in-laws - Stella Graves, Anne Graves and Art Normand; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers - Edward, Raymond, Richard and Ronald Graves; sisters - Irene Brock, Eva Robare, Ida Mischeck, Mercy "Mert" Cousineau and Vivian "Vee" Normand.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and also at the church on Saturday from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Roy's funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Jason LaFlamme and will be held at the Munising Baptist Church in Wetmore on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Roy will be escorted by Brad Kolbus, Robbie Kolbus, Scott Graves, Pete Syers, Tim Perry, and Chris Graves. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in the spring where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
