Roy L. Maxon, age 71, of E9784 Old Indiantown Road, Munising, died following a lengthy illness on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Munising Memorial Hospital. He was born on June 22, 1937 in Munising to the late Leo and Lillian (Bonner) Maxon. Roy attended school in Munising and then worked on Lake Superior on the fishing boats until he married Margie Beatty at Sacred Heart on July 16, 1955. Roy worked at a sawmill and then at the Ford Garage before moving to Illinois in 1960. In Illinois, he was active with Search and Rescue in Winthrop Harbor and Zion and was also the Pack Leader for the Cub Scouts. Roy worked at American Motors in Kenosha, Wisconsin and medically retired from there. He and Margie moved back to Munising in 1976. As a family, they owned, operated, and "fired" each other from the Waterfront Restaurant from 1982 - 1993. Roy was a member of Sacred Heart Church. As a youth he enjoyed boxing and as an adult enjoyed painting, woodwork, building furniture, and constantly repairing his children's cars. Roy's favorite pastime was being with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of over fifty-three years - Margie; their children - Kathy (Paul) Baij, Roy Maxon, and Marc (Angela) Maxon all of Munising, and Babs (Amy Penoyar) Maxon of AuTrain; nine grandchildren - Zach, Molly, Kyle, Austin, Kris, Anna, Trevor, Nick, and Timmy; brothers and sisters - Jim (Margaret) Maxon, Betty Woodaz, and Jerry (Char) Maxon all of Munising, Verna (Don) Kallio of Trenary, and Bob (Sharon) Maxon of Gladstone; brothers and sisters - in - law - Joe (Julia) Beatty of Munising, Shirley (Mike) Cluley of AuTrain, Rita (Richard) Sinervo of Mississippi, Larry "Chuck" (Wanda) Beatty of Alabama, Barbara (Mike) Boyd of Wisconsin; Mick (Carolyn) Beatty and Ron (Alice) Mager all of Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Andrew Maxon, and brothers-in-law - Tage Woodaz and Donald Mager.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Sacred Heart Church at 10:00 a.m.
