Russell Daniel Hemingway, age 71, of St. Nicholas Avenue, Christmas died at his home following heart complications on Monday, October 15, 2012. He was born on August 11, 1941 in Munising to the late Ben and Evelyn (Hill) Hemingway. Russ graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School and attended Northern Michigan University. He left college and served in the U.S. Army from February 1964 until February 1966. Russ returned to NMU and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting. He managed the Ben Franklin in Munising before moving to Florida. In Florida, he managed a Wick's store and then returned to Munising. Russ owned and operated Munising Specialty for many years and then he ran Russ' Stuff before ill health retired him. He was a former City of Munising Commissioner and he anonymously began coordinating Christmas bags for shut-ins during the Holiday Season. Russ was a member of the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, Grand Island Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Moose Lodge, and the NMU Alumni Association, and he was a huge Green Bay Packer fan. Russ is survived by cousins and friends and he was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guards will conduct military honors.
