S. Lorraine Horwood, age 77, of AuTrain, died early Wednesday morning, August 31, 2011 at her son's home in Marquette, under the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice. She was born on April 17, 1934 in Chatham to the late Matt and Linne (Lintula) Kamppinen. Raised in Chatham, Lorraine graduated as Salutatorian of the Eben High School Class of 1952. She then graduated from Sparrow Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. Lorraine married her high school sweetheart, Richard "Dick" Horwood, on November 12, 1955. Together they raised their four sons. Dick's job with the Michigan State Police stationed them in St. Ignace, Traverse City, Munising and Marquette. During that time, Lorraine worked for Mackinaw Straits, Munson, Munising Memorial and Marquette General Hospitals. She retired from Marquette General's Operating Room after seventeen years there in 1987. They traveled in their motor home during the winter months in the sunbelt states for nine years before they found a winter home in Florida. They enjoyed their time at Lilly Lake in Frostproof, Florida for nine years until Dick's health returned them home to the Upper Peninsula in AuTrain. Lorraine was a member of the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church and she enjoyed traveling, reading, and sewing.
She is survived by her husband of over fifty-five years - Dick Horwood of AuTrain; their four sons & daughters-in-law - Richard & Kim Horwood of Okemos, MI, Gary & Lisa Horwood of Marquette, Michael & Anne Horwood of Maple Grove, MN and Steven & Laura of Saline, MI; eight grandchildren - Lindsay, Kayley, Kristen, Drew, Paige, Eric, Allison and Alaina; sisters - Bertha (Warren) Nix and Lois Maki of Chatham; brothers-in-law - Robert (Pat) Horwood of Owosso, MI, Bill Horwood of Clare, MI, and Harry Gohl; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and sisters and brothers-in-law Hilda (George) Wanska, Aili (Larry) Luoma, Anne (George) Hallstrom, Helmi (Elmer) Wanska, Inez (Walter) Seppanen, Helen (Fred) Ketchum, L. Elaine (Leslie) Latvala, Ruth Gohl, Richard Maki, and Harold Johnson; and grand daughter Amy Lynn Horwood.
Visitation will be on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. and then on Sunday, September 4 at the Chatham Lutheran Apostolic Church from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Lorraine's funeral services will be conducted by Roger Kangas beginning at 10:30 a.m. Committal will be at Pine Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial in Lorrain's name may be made to the Lake Superior Hospice or an Alzheimer's Association.
