Sean “Corn” Robert Cornish, age 52, of Munising, died peacefully and unexpectedly of natural causes at his home. He was born on April 21, 1971 in Munising to Robert “Corn” and Karen (Cota) Cornish. Corn grew up in Munising and played football for the Munising Mustangs. Sean entered the U.S. Navy and served during the Persian Gulf War. He was stationed in San Diego and Panama. Corn returned to Munising and began serving as a volunteer in the Munising Fire Department. He began employment for the City of Munising first as a fire truck driver and then he moved to the wastewater treatment plant. Corn then moved to the public works department and retired at age fifty. His first year of retirement put 12,000 miles on his truck as he traveled across the country sightseeing and visiting family. Corn came home and went to work at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course as groundskeeper. He loved golfing. Corn also enjoyed riding his Harley with friends, hunting, and ice fishing. He was a past member of the American Legion.
Corn is survived by his parents – Robert “Corn” (Corrine) Cornish of Munising and Karen (Wally) Schultz of Marquette; sister – Heidi (Christian) Verardi of Marquette; niece – Emmalyn Verardi; step-sister – Nikki (Jeff) Rochefort; step-brothers – Tad Zaleski, Scott Schultz, Jesse Schultz, and George (Amber) Schultz; aunts – Pat Cornish and Ruth (Leon) Hebert; uncle – Tom Hall; step nieces and nephews; numerous cousins including his cousin and childhood friend - Bromley Hall, who grew up with Sean; and many good friends who will miss his smile and laugh. Sean was preceded in death by an infant sister Kaylene Rae in 1976 and his grandparents Art and Sylvia Cota and Clyde and Winnie Cornish, and uncle Clyde Cornish.
Services will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023. Family and friends are requested to wear Lions or University of Michigan apparel in honor of Corn's favorite teams. Visiting time with family and friends will be at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. Military honors will be rendered by the Alger County Veterans Honor Guard at 4:30 p.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. A time of fellowship will take place at the Barge Inn following the service at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to the Munising Fire Department Auxiliary Fire Victims Fund (c/o Peoples State Bank) in Sean's name.
