Sheila M. Yokeum

Sheila M. Yokeum, age 97, of Trenary, died early Tuesday morning, July 10, 2012 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born in Alcona County, Michigan to Delbert and Eva (Brothers) Atherton. Sheila grew up in Owosso and attended school in Owosso and Sands when her family moved to the U.P. She married Louis Yokeum in March of 1933 and together they raised their ten children. Sheila worked as a waitress, barmaid, and she cooked for the Kallio Brothers in their lumber camp. Sheila moved to Lansing and worked at the Red Rail before returning to the U.P. She bought and ran The Wheels Restaurant in Kiva for nine years. After the sale of the business to her daughter, she continued to work there for twelve more years. Sheila retired in the fall of 1993 at the age of seventy-nine. She was a member of the Trenary Senior Citizens and the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Sheila was proud of having the first float from Kiva in Trenary's 4th of July parade. She enjoyed knitting, singing, dancing, playing cribbage, and traveling.

Sheila is survived by seven children - Eunice Pelletier of PawPaw, MI; Vivian Platias of Osier, Jerry (Janet) Yokeum of South Carolina, Theodore Yokeum of Missouri, Patrick (Rose) Yokeum of Colorado, Sandra Kelly of Gwinn, and Terry (Sandy) Yokeum of Cadillac, MI; 22 grandchildren; 40 + great-grandchildren; numerous great-great grandchildren; sister - Virginia Tweedale of Chatham; brothers - Delbert Atherton, Jr. of Jackson, MI, Kim Atherton of California, and Charles (Carol) Atherton of Trenary; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sons - James Yokeum in July of 1958, Jack Yokeum in the fall of 1958, and Thomas Yokeum in January of 2000, and three sisters - Joyce Atherton, Doris Rock, and Vera Morin.

A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date and interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
