Munising
Shirley "Shirl" L. Robare, age 81, of 1403 Nestor Street, Munising, died with his wife at his side at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at his home in Munising following a lengthy illness. He was born on November 26, 1924 in Munising to Gordon and Margaret (McEachren) Robare. Shirl graduated from Sacred Heart School and attended Wm. G. Mather High School. He entered into the U.S. Army on June 23, 1943. Shirl served the European African Middle Eastern Theater and was involved with the second wave on Omaha Beach. He participated in battles and campaigns at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He earned the EAME Ribbon with one Silver Star for the campaigns and battles he had participated in and the Good Conduct Medal. Shirl began his employment with Kimberly-Clark on November 8, 1950 as a Broke Handler in the Beater Room and eventually moved up to 4th Hand. He held positions in the Machine Room, and moved to the Specialties Department in 1953. He began in Specialties as a Rewinder Helper and after holding various positions moved up to Assistant Operator then Operator. Shirl retired on January 1, 1986 after 35 years of employment with Kimberly-Clark. He married Barbara J. Olson on May 19, 1956. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, taking care of his lawn, and his camp on Sixteen Mile Lake. He loved spending time in his garage with his neighbors, family, and friends. Shirl loved his dogs and was always walking Sandy, Foo-Foo, and Skippy in the neighborhood.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years - Barb Robare of Munising; sister - Beryl (Ed) O'Boyle of Munising; sisters-in-law - Donna Robare of Munising, Karen Schmidtman of Munising, Pat Guadagnoli of Chicago, IL, Doris Olson of Christmas; brother-in-law - Chester Pawielski; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Shirl was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gordon Robare, brother-in-law Richard Olson, and sister-in-law Nancy Pawielski.
Visitation and funeral services will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Monday, June 5, 2006. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will conduct Shirl's funeral in the funeral home's chapel at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
