Eben Junction
Signe O. Laakso, age 89, of Hibbing, Minnesota and formerly of Eben Junction, died on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing. She was born on October 9, 1919 to John and Mary (Kampinen) Nykanen in Chatham. She lived in Hibbing the past seven years. Signe was employed as a part time Postmaster for Eben Junction and made and decorated wedding and all-occasion cakes. In her earlier years, Signe played softball, went fishing, skiing, and snowshoeing. She enjoyed gardening and was an animal advocate. She was a member of the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church of Cedar Valley.
She is survived by her two daughters - Priscilla (Dan) Lind of Nashwauk, MN and Louise (John) Lundin of Hibbing, MN; her sister - Edith Taylor of North Ft. Meyers, FL; seven grandchildren - Laura (Mike) Morris of Columbia Heights, MN, Jeremy (Beth) Lind, Rebecca Lind, Matthew (Leann) Lind, Miriam (Pete) Kero all of Hibbing, Liina Lundin of Minneapolis, MN and Riittu Lundin, of Hermantown, MN; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous brothers and sisters in faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary (Kampinen) Nykanen, husband George Laakso in 2003, four sisters, and six brothers.
Funeral services were held in Cedar Valley on December 31, 2008. Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 15, 2009 at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham at 1:00 p.m. Mrs. Laakso's obituary can be found at
