Stanley William Savola, age 82, of Munising, died early Monday morning, February 3, 2020 at Medilodge in Munising.  He was born in Mathias Township, Michigan on June 3, 1937 to John and Bessie (Niemi) Savola.  Stanley grew up in Trenary and graduated from Trenary High School in 1955.  He joined the U.S. Air Force on May 31, 1955 and was stationed in Japan as an aircraft jet mechanic and a communications operation helper.  On March 22, 1958, Stanley married his high school sweetheart, Pat “Patsy” Brant and moved her to Lincoln, Nebraska while he finished his military duties.  Stanley was proudly discharged from the Air Force on May 30, 1959 and he and Pat returned home and raised their family.  He worked construction and began employment with Kimberly Clark in October of 1960.  During his thirty-three years of dedicated service, Stanley worked in the Machine Room, the Specialties Department, and the Maintenance Department as a carpenter which was the job he held when he retired in January of 1994. Stanley was an integral part of the construction and building of Christ Lutheran Church in Shingleton.  He was an active member and served as church president.  Stanley loved the church.  He also loved to hunt and fish with his family and taught them the value of hard work by his example.  Stanley enjoyed the time he spent helping all three of his sons with the construction of their own homes.  He loved his family and spending time with them at he and Pat’s home or at camp where Stanley could be found fishing, cutting and hauling wood, spending time in the sauna, or just puttering around.  As much as Stanley loved his wife and sons, his grandchildren were the apples of his eye and he took pride in how much they enjoyed being with him.  He even played softball with them until he was seventy-five years old.  Stanley was a good man and a jokester and he will be missed by all who loved him.

He is survived by his wife of almost sixty-two years – Pat Savola of Munising; their three sons and daughters-in-law – Mike (Rita) Savola of AuTrain, Jerome (Julie) Savola of Munising, and Bryan (Pam) Savola of Munising; grandchildren – Crystal, Michael, Tamara, Joey, Sarah, Cody, Erika, Joe, Meghan, and Jake; great-grandchildren – Chase, Jon, Sawyer, Eli, Trey, Maddison, Ryder, Aubri, Kayleb, and Nicholas; brothers – Jim (Wilma) Savola and David (Annette) Savola; sister – Emily (Ken) Clement; extra son – Al (Karen) Maxon; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Stanley was preceded in death by his parents and brother Raymond.

Services for Stanley will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020.  Visiting time with family and friends will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising.  Military honors will be rendered at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home by the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard.  Stanley’s memorial service will be held at the Christ Lutheran Church, N5271 M-94, Shingleton on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. and will be conducted by Pastor Dick Hueter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to the Christ Lutheran Church in Shingleton in Stanley’s name.  Stanley’s family would like to thank the staff at Medilodge for the care he received while he was there.
