Munising

Stephen “Steve” J. Cromell, age 70, of Munising, died Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at his home under the loving care of his wife.  He was born on November 21, 1949 to James and Patricia (Perry) Cromell.  Steve grew up in Munising and graduated from Wm. G. Mather in 1967.  He then graduated from Central Michigan University with his teaching degree.  Following college, Steve took a year and backpacked through Europe.  He married Debra Pawielski in 1976 and together they raised their two children.  Steve was a talented baseball player and enjoyed his years playing for Harry’s Oilers.  Steve began working at Mather High School as the business manager during the construction of the new high school then became director of transportation and special education.  Steve was hired as the elementary and middle school principal before becoming superintendent of the Munising Public Schools.  After a short retirement, Steve decided to return to school, and became the superintendent in Mishicot, WI.  Due to health reasons, Mr. Cromell had to retire again, but thanks to the loving gift from his brother Dick, he received a kidney transplant and was able to recover and go back to the job he loved.  Steve finished his career in education at the Sevastopol School District in Door County as their superintendent.  Steve and Debbie began wintering in Florida, giving him the opportunity to be with his grandsons and take them on any adventure they were ready to go on.  Steve was a competitive card player and enjoyed playing euchre and pinochle.

He is survived by his wife of forty-four years Debra - Cromell of Munising, children - Cassie Cromell of Florahome, Florida and Lucas (Bailee) Cromell of De Pere, Wisconsin, grandchildren - Isaac and Simon, mother - Patricia Cromell of Munising, brother - Richard “Dick” (Carol) Cromell of Oconto Falls, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Steve was preceded in death by his father James Cromell and brother Nick Cromell.
