Wetmore / Morley, MI

Steven F. Almas, Sr., age 69, of Wetmore and Morley, MI, died Saturday, September 5, 2020 at UP Health Systems – Marquette following a brief and unexpected illness.  He was born on June 26, 1951 in Lakeview, MI to the late Charles and Merie (Thurston) Almas.  Steve grew up in Morley on his family’s small dairy farm where he learned many skills and the value of hard work.  He graduated from Morley Stanwood High School in 1969.  Steve was introduced to Dianna Ackley on a blind-date, and on July 25, 1970 the two of them were married.  In 1976, Steve’s love for the outdoors led him to move to the Upper Peninsula with his wife and two small children.  That April, with snow still on the ground they lived in tents while building their home on the Old Plank Road.  Steve worked at CCI in the Veneer Mill and then started working in the woods cutting pulp with his friend Andy Demogola for Red Seymour and Bill “Snuffy” Reed.  In 1989, the family moved back to Morley, but continued to vacation and spend any long weekend back in the U.P.  In Morley, Steve worked many jobs: truck driver, hauling milk for the Amish, maintenance at Kelsey Memorial Hospital, and then as a custodian at Morley Stanwood Middle School.  No matter where he was working, he enjoyed the interactions with his co-workers and especially had a soft spot for the students.  Steve enjoyed bowling in leagues with his team Don Corps Barber Shop and softball with Apple Betty’s.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and anything that let him roam in the great outdoors.

Steve is survived by his wife of fifty years – Dianna; children – CanDeta (Rick) Lyons of Morley and Steven (Angie) Almas II of Clarksville, MI; grandchildren – Thomas (Joselynn), Codey (Jordyn), Kelsie, Monica (Josh), Amber (Ben), Jessica, Adrian, and Makayla;  twelve great-grandchildren; sister Susanne (Gary) McIntyre; sister-in-law – Linda Almas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Randy Almas.

A time for visiting with family and friends and a memorial service will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Green Country Church (4010 205th Ave, Morley, MI 49336).  Visiting time will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Steve’s memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with a luncheon to follow.
