Munising
Sylvia M. Moe, age 98, of 318 W. Superior Street, Munising died early Tuesday morning, March 20, 2012 at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on November 21, 1913 in Ishpeming to Isaac and Amanda (Hietola) Pitkamaki. Sylvia grew up on the family farm in Eben and attended school there. On September 17, 1931, she married Arneth Joseph Moe and they moved to Munising. Sylvia raised her children and she also cleaned rooms at the Northern Motel. She went to work at Washington School and began cooking there in 1961. Sylvia worked through the closing of Washington School and retired from Central Elementary School. She and Arneth were married over fifty-one years when he preceded her in death on April 10, 1983. Sylvia was a member of Eden Lutheran Church, worked with the Peace Circle, and was active with the quilting activities. She enjoyed sewing and worked many years out of her home sewing for others. Sylvia also enjoyed gardening and canning.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law - Jean (Mike) Hayes of Munising, Kathy (Mike) Furlott of Port Washington, WI, Nancy (Roger) Thompson of Brighton, MI, and Elaine (Ken) Bodell of Bark River; daughter-in-law - Julie Moe of Rapid River; fifteen grandchildren - Carolee, Jimmy, Teri, Kenny, Raelynn, Kristine, Dana, Neal, Kathy, Michael, John, Pat, Wayne, Sean, and Mathew; many great and great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arneth; daughter - Janice Moe in 1963; sons John Moe in 1998 and Arne Moe in 2001; grandson Kenneth Bodell; granddaughter Lori Hayes; sister Gertrude Carlson; and brothers Eugene and Urho Pitkamaki.
Sylvia's services will be held at the Eden Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 24, 2012. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Pastor Elisabeth Zant will conduct her funeral service at noon. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising and she will be escorted by her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to Eden Lutheran Church.
