Munising
Theda Barbara "Babs" Bartilucci, age 93, of Sand Point Road of Munising, died Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on June 6, 1916 to the late John and Annie (Griffith) Hoy in Escanaba, Michigan. As a child her family moved to Wetmore, MI where they owned a dairy farm.
Theda started her schooling in Munising at Sacred Heart Elementary; she progressed to Wm. G. Mather High School. Her family at the time had owned and operated the first pasteurizing milk plant in Munising. With the recession of the 30's in full swing the family lost the farm and pasteurizing plant.
Theda graduated from Mather in 1935. She was a member of the high school's great band that won the title of "Best Band in the U.P." She played the tenor sax. The band was invited to participate in the Chicago World Fair of the 30's.
After graduation Theda left for Lower Michigan to fid a job. She was hired in Pontiac, MI in the Fisher Body Plant in the quality control department. She stayed with the auto plant until she left to join the U.S. Army, a member of the Army Women's Corp. (W.A.C.) in early 1944. She volunteered into the Medical Corp. after basic training and three months of medical training school at Fort Sam Houston Army Hospital in Texas. Theda was assigned as a surgical technician T/5 grade Corporal at McCloskey General Hospital in Temple, TX in the operating room.
At the McCloskey General Hospital operating room she met a man with whom she would be spending the rest of her life. He was her husband to be, and at the time, her Sergeant Pasqule Bartilucci. Love was abound in that Army operating room. He started calling her "Babs" a name that lasted a lifetime. They married in Munising at Sacred Heart Church on August 8, 1946.
The couple went to New York City to live where Pasquale had a mother and dad and a job waiting.
Theda took to NYC like a pair of old kit gloves. Traveling thru and around NYC like she designed the place. She found a Medical secretary school Paine Hall Central Park East, where under the G.I. Bill, she signed up for a two year course. Upon graduation she landed a medical secretary job for a 5th Ave. and 45th Street "Heart of Manhattan" Doctor. A one girl office she worked out very well, the doctor's patients were mostly Broadway show people. She met and was dined and gifted with popular people of the time. One day, while shopping on 5th Ave. she met a producer of the T.V. show, "Name That Tune." He picked Theda out of the crowd to be a contestant on the show. She made out well, not bad for a country gal!
In 1955, Theda and Pat moved out of NYC to live on Long Island, due to Pasquale schooling and work in the Aircraft industry on Long Island. While living there an opening for a librarian was needed at the Grumman Aerospace Corp., located in Bethpage, Long Island. While Pasquale was working there as a Reliability Engineer, Theda thought she should apply so they could work together. She was hired and again with her ability, knowledge, and personality with in five years was the top member of the Library staff. She was totally in charge of the Top-Secret room at Grumman Aero-Space. She had N.A.S.A inspectors eating out of her hands, amazing gal!
Theda and Pasquale had totally retired in 1980 and returned to her roots in the Munising area. Living in AuTrain for ten years, she picked up playing the piano, joined various clubs, and socializing with new and old friends. Theda joined the AuTrain Famous Indian Band (lots of laughs), Ladies Foresters at Sacred Heart, American Legion, Munising Hospital Association, Friends of the Library, AuTrain Senior Citizens Club, and the Knights of Columbus and Son's of Italy with her husband.
In 1990, they moved to their current home on Sand Point Road. Theda loved her home on the bay and loved her special neighbors. While here she picked up her Long Island attractions of pleasure boating. Theda always loved water and boating. While living on Long Island, they owned the twenty-five foot cruiser the "Theda B." They belonged to the Long Island Port Jefferson Yacht Club, where many summers were spent on their cruiser on Long Island Sound, the Connecticut River, Peconic Bay, and Atlantic Ocean.
Theda is survived by her husband of over sixty-three years - Pasquale Bartilucci; sister - Elizabeth Keller of Athelstane, WI; nieces - Clare Anne Mutter of Munising, Barbara (Cliff) Sayre of West Bend, WI, Mary Beth Ryan of Elkhorn, WI, and Patricia (Dave) Ehlers of Caro, MI; Nephew Mike (Sherri) Hoy of Caro, MI; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
