Thelma L. Pater, age 82, of Shingleton died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on June 12, 1926 to the late Willard and Viola (Linsey) Jerome in Riverdale, MI. During WWII, Thelma worked as a civilian at Galina in Spokane, WA, in an airplane factory for the U.S. Army. Thelma married Joseph Pater in 1986. She worked hard her entire life at many things: she was a cook at the CC Camps, worked as a house keeper for many people, she enjoyed making rugs on the loom to sell, and worked at Wheelins Restaurant, and operated her own fishing bait shop at her home in Shingleton. Thelma loved the outdoors, she was an avid fisherman, and loved to hunt and pick berries. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Christ Lutheran Church in Shingleton. Thelma will always be remembered for great cooking and enjoying life.
Thelma is survived by her son - Matthew (Kathy) Smith of Shingleton; grandchildren - Karen and Paul Smith; great-grandchildren; Brandon and Jayme Nelson; sisters - Louise Marcus, Alice Marshall, Mary , Vivian Strom, and Ruby; and brother - James Jerome and Billy Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband - Joseph Pater;children - Gladys Ann Smith, Brenda Lee Smith, and David Norman Smith; parents - Willard and Viola; sister - Ellen Cashner; brother - George Allen; and granddaughter - Mary Alicia Smith.
Thelma's visitation will be on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Her service will begin immediately following at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home where Pastor Dick Hueter will be officiating. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising in the spring. The family would like to give a special thanks to Thelma's care giver Sandy Dwelly for all of her compassionate care.
