Marquette
Surrounded by her family Theresa E. Debelak breathed her last, Thursday evening, March 5, 2009.
Theresa will be most remembered for her work. A colleague once told her son, "Your mother shaped people's careers; we all aspired to be like her." Her family couldn't go far in Marquette County without someone recognizing the name and asking about Theresa. Theresa worked in nursing, completing her career as head nurse on the Marquette General Hospital Oncology Unit. Theresa received her RN from Mercy College in Detroit.
Born October 30, 1923 to Louis and Teresa Knaus, Theresa grew up a farm girl in Traunik. After school, Theresa followed her siblings away from the Upper Peninsula living in Detroit until marrying Louis Debelak in Milwaukee in 1948. Theresa and Louis started their family there, returning to Michigan in 1958. Settling in Skandia and raising five children kept Louis and Theresa on the go until Theresa resumed her career, working at St. Luke's Hospital and Marquette General Hospital until her retirement. Theresa enjoyed traveling, her family, and her large circle of friends.
Theresa is survived by daughters Kathy, Joan, and Mary Ellen, sons John and Tom, daughters-in-laws Carolyn Taylor and Pam Debelak, grandchildren Matt Martinez, Tyler, Ethan, Eli, Riley, and Liz Debelak, many nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law, Josephine Debelak.
Theresa was preceded in death by her husband Louis, parents, brothers, Louis, John, and Henry, and sisters, Angela, Mary, Tillie, Anne, and Fran.
Family and friends of Theresa are invited to share a memory as we meet to celebrate her life. We are assembling at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21st, at the Skandia Community Building, 224 Kreiger Dr., Skandia.
